Carrie Cox's So Many Beats of the Heart is an uplifting women's fiction title that will be loved by fans of Maggie Alderson and Marian Keyes. Carrie Cox is a Perth-based journalist and author whose previous novel, Afternoons with Harvey Beam (Fremantle Press, 2018), which was hailed as a 'brilliant debut' by the Australian Women's Weekly and 'sensitive and impressive' by The Australian. So Many Beats of the Heart is a wonderfully warm and witty novel about a marriage counsellor, who suddenly becomes her own case study when her husband abruptly leaves her. Carrie Cox said: 'I really wanted to explore the impact of time itself on long-term relationships - the improbability of two people travelling through it at the same pace and still wanting to be together ... I created a character who knows all the answers but is suddenly left with only questions.' Kelly Doust said: 'Carrie Cox's writing is exactly what we're looking for - smart, funny up-lift which, for all its lightness of touch, shares some deeply insightful truths about humanity, love and relationships.' Carrie's books will be available for purchase at the event.

An A-List for Death is a sparkling mystery from a stylish new voice in crime fiction, in a book that will delight fans of Richard Osman and Kerry Greenwood. TV researcher Poppy McGowan has never sought the spotlight, and is none too happy to be photographed with rock god Nathan Castle. When the photo pops up on celebrity gossip sites, it sparks a media feeding frenzy, forcing Poppy to go to ground, don a wig, and pull some nifty moves to escape a tailing car. On top of that, she cops abuse from Nathan's outraged fans. None of this would have happened if Poppy hadn't found Nathan's mother Daisy, one-time glamour girl and elderly best friend of her Aunty Mary, bleeding and unconscious in her bathroom. The police dismiss the case as an accident, but Poppy is sure there are questions to be answered. Who attacked Daisy, and why? Will she come out of her coma? What secrets are her gathering family hiding? What happens to Daisy's money if she dies? Pamela Hart is an award-winning author for adults and children. Under the name Pamela Freeman she is well known for her fantasy novels for adults, the Castings Trilogy, and her Aurealis Award-winning novel Ember and Ash. More recently she has been writing historical romance novels as Pamela Hart, including the internationally lauded The War Bride. Pamela lives in Sydney with her husband and their son, and teaches at the Australian Writers' Centre, where she is Director of Creative Writing. Join Ian Kemish, as he speaks about his book The Consul, an absorbing insider’s account of leadership and service within Australia’s Consular service, through tumultuous events including the September 11 attacks, the Bali bombings and the Boxing Day Tsunami. As head of Australia’s consular service, Ian Kemish played a central role in the nation’s response to some of the most dramatic events of the early twenty-first century, including the September 11 attacks and the Bali bombings. He led the small band of Australian consuls as they confronted the new challenges of global jihadism, supporting families who lost loved ones, and negotiated the release of Australians unjustly detained abroad. In The Consul, Kemish offers a unique and personal perspective on Australia’s foreign affairs challenges of the last two decades, from hostage diplomacy to natural disasters and evacuations from war zones. This timely and engaging book also asks us to consider how world events have changed the way we travel now and in the future. Books will be available to be purchased and signed on the night.

John Howard was the 25th Prime Minister of Australia and in the years that he served in the national parliament he came to understand the special character of Australia; to appreciate its strengths and weaknesses; and most importantly to respect that sense of balance in the formulation of public policy that has long defined us as a people and made us an attractive destination for people from across the world

A Sense of Balance is written against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as some of the more contested political events of recent years - the election of Donald Trump, the Brexit vote, the rise of China, and, within our own country, the leadership of five prime ministers in eleven years - these reflections touch on how Australia has responded to pressure over the last decade or so.
