"What a pity that I am not an honest man!"
― Maurice Leblanc, Arséne Lupin, Gentleman-Thief
Written by French novelist and writer of short stories, Maurice Marie Émile Leblanc, Arséne Lupin, Gentleman-Thief - as the title suggests, is about Lupin, who's burglar but also a gentleman. He steals from the rich and powerful, but the poor and innocent shouldn't fear him - they can even profit from his spontaneous generosity.
From the very start, Lupin was introduced as a famous thief. The story opened with him using an alias and boarding a ship. The ship's guests, led by Bernard d'Andrezy, learned of this and tried to weed him out, but a woman's jewels were already stolen before they could. Meanwhile, d'Andrezy courts a woman called Miss Nelly. At the ship´s destination, a "Lupin expert inspector" named Ganimard is on a stakeout. He arrests d'Andrezy - who turned out to be Lupin! Although scornful, Miss Nelly knowingly eliminated evidence that can be used against Lupin.
Lupin's ingenuity for crime is said to match Sherlock Holmes' cleverness, but he´s already arrested in the first chapter - or was he?

The Hollow Needle is one of Maurice Leblanc's best-known novels. In it the famous gentleman-burglar and master of disguises Arsène Lupin finds himself playing an intense game of cat and mouse with the young, surprisingly apt amateur-detective Isidore Beautrelet. Old foes Detective Ganimard and the famous English detective Holmlock Shears (so renamed to avoid copyright infringement) also make appearances. Lupin is chasing the most valuable object he has ever had the opportunity to steal: the Hollow Needle, which hides unfathomable treasure and a secret that the kings of France have been handing down since the time of Julius Caesar. Lupin has been depicted in countless film and stage adaptions, most recently as the inspiration of the Netflix series, Lupin, starring Omar Sy. This Warbler Classics edition includes a detailed chronology of Leblanc's life and work, as well as the eulogy he wrote for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
