At the heart of Yours in Filial Regard is a treasure trove of letters written more than 150 years ago by four brothers-all of them privates in the Confederate army. Writing on soapboxes or on their knees, from far-flung camps and battlefields that include some of the bloodiest encounters of the Civil War, each son strives to maintain contact with friends and family members back in Limestone County, Texas. Despite their doggedly optimistic outlook, the sons of James Marshall and Terrisa Adeline Love reveal the misery of wartime for infantry and cavalry alike. In letters that still touch, alarm, and often amuse, the writers yearn for news of home, seeking to discover the fates of brothers, wives, and parents. Discovered at a yard sale in the 1990s and donated to the Mary Couts Burnett Library of Texas Christian University, the letters have been carefully transcribed and are accompanied by illuminating headnotes that provide historical background and context, as well as an introduction that discusses the vital, evolving role of letters in American life.
