The Greatest Gift

Bestselling author Rachael Johns returns with a poignant, heart-warming story of a woman who wants nothing else than to be a mum, and one who never wanted to be a mother.

Mother: female parent of a child

Mum: the woman who nurtures, raises and loves a child

Radio host Harper Drummond lives for her career. Every day she meets fascinating people doing extraordinary things, but has begun to wonder whether there could be something more for her out there. She's financially secure, happily married to Samuel and has a great group of friends – what more could she want? It's only when she interviews one special couple that she starts to think about whether she could make a different kind of contribution.

Claire and Jasper Lombard are passionate about their thriving hot air balloon business and know they're lucky to find such joy in their work and in each other. But while Jasper has accepted that he will never be a father, Claire has found it hard to come to terms with her infertility. She doesn't want Jasper to regret choosing her over a child in the years to come. Is there a way to give themselves a real chance at being a happy family? Can they find someone who will give them the greatest gift? Or will it come at a greater cost?

The poignant, heartwarming story of two women: one who wants nothing else than to be a mum, and one who never wanted to be a mother, from the bestselling, ABIA award–winning author of The Patterson Girls.

RATINGS & REVIEW

14/11/2017 7:10:01 AM - Krystal
Heartwarming
So chick-lit is really not my genre of choice, but this heartwarming novel blew me away! The novel is a detailed journey, so begins with the romance between Claire and Jasper while alternating between Harper's first inclination to donate eggs in the present. It's a clever opening that creates immediate investment in the main characters and even though you know what's coming, it's enjoyable to read. Claire and Jasper are an adorable couple, and I became rather attached to them and their heartbreaking journey. Harper was a strong independent woman who probably mentioned that fact one too many times but was well-balanced by her blossoming maternal instinct. Samuel was a jerk, but then he was nice, but then he was a jerk ... honestly, the guy gave me whiplash with his mood swings. I can't go into too much detail without spoilers so let me just say this is so much bigger than the ethics of 'test tube' babies. This story really tugged at my cold, crime-fiction-loving heart and kept me hooked the entire time. I was genuinely surprised by how much this book messed with my emotions! A captivating, thoughtful story of an incredibly real journey. Highly recommend.

Comfortable read
Rachael Johns has written a solid piece of prose, a comfortable read to lean into that tugs on the heartstrings. Touching on difficult story matter, it was good to see her developing the plot and characters in a way that didn't make it feel rushed or too trying to read.

Wonderful read
A wonderful read from Rachael Johns, known also for The Patterson Girls and The Art of Keeping Secrets. Her latest novel follows the intertwining stories of Harper, a radio personality, and her husband Samuel, and Claire and Jasper, a couple who love hot air ballooning and live in New South Wale's Hunter Valley. This book raises themes of parenthood, and what it means to be selfless. This book was a page turner. Although the topics raised were thought provoking and at times ethically challenging, Johns does a good jobs at presenting them. As with her other books, Johns also described the Australian setting well- one of my favourite things when reading books from Australian authors. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a page-turning read with a twist.

A life's journey
'The Greatest Gift' is a great read. From the first page you will be invested in the characters. Set in the beautiful parts on NSW you are instantly drawn into the life of this young couple as they go through their life's journey. This is a quick and easy summer read, but be warned have the tissues handy as it takes you through unexpected events!

Exploring a life changing decision
I don’t normally read this genre, but this novel was opportunity to read an Australian author and about a topic that is rarely written about. The story kicks off quickly and gives you an understanding of the characters and their values that drive this life changing decision - the donation and acceptance of an egg in order for a couple to have a family. It is an easy read for summer, but will likely lead to reflection and discussion well after the final page is consumed. It includes the the themes of family, friendship, love, but most of all the hope for the future that comes when a baby is born.

Touching Story
This is a beautiful story of life, love, loss and understanding change. I found it quite easy to read and very enjoyable. It speaks on the subject of infertility, so anyone who might be struggling with this might find it hard to read. The story really opened my eyes to what so many women have to cope with, showing me a whole world that was hidden from me. It is a "must have" for anyones reading collection. The only reason it looses one star for me, is the gold writing on the cover ended up coming off, but then again maybe its just a sign of how much i loved the book and couldnt put it down :)

Captivating and emotional.
The Greatest Gift is a story full of heartbreak and love. The initial setting up of the story, through going back in time and leading up to the present day when Claire and Harper meet was an interesting touch. I always enjoy stories set in Australia and this is a wonderful addition. A great read where you will need tissues at times, but so life-affirming. Highly recommended.

Hot Air Ballooning and the Joy of Family.
'The Greatest Gift' is a celebration of family and how it can shape a person - for better or for worse. The reader is quickly drawn to both Harper and Claire as they allow themselves to step beyond their own particular situations and try to realise their greatest desires in life. Beautiful and soft in moments, heartbreaking in others, it is set between Sydney and the Hunter Valley and all the colour of hot air ballooning over the vines. Grab your tissues, you will need them as you laugh and cry along with the loveable characters in 'The Greatest Gift'.
