Slow Horses

Banished to Slough House from the ranks of achievers at Regent's Park for various crimes of drugs and drunkenness, lechery and failure, politics and betrayal, Jackson Lamb's misfit crew of highly trained joes don't run ops, they push paper.

But not one of them joined the Intelligence Service to be a 'slow horse'.

A boy is kidnapped and held hostage. His beheading is scheduled for live broadcast on the net.

RATINGS & REVIEW

Slow Horses - a go slow book
I won this book through a Dymocks competition. I had to keep checking that this is actually the first book in the series by Mick Herron as it was a REALLY hard read. I normally love crime/ spy novels BUT where was the suspense? The story is about a bunch of people (you later learn they are MI5 rejects) that are banished to Slough House where they then become termed Slow Horses. Considering that the first part of the book (Prologue?) was excellent I must ask what happened once we hit Part 1? It was like it was a totally different writer. The characters are basically thrown at you - and there are a lot of them - with a name, no description and an extremely brief reason - if at all - as to why they have been banished to Slough House. I certainly will not be buying the rest in the series as I found it to be a very unenjoyable slow read.

crime spy thriller
Loved it! There are a lot of characters to keep track of but each one is wonderfully written with a balanced backstory. End result? You care about what happens to them. Even Jackson Lamb. If you are a fan of Brit spy thrillers, you will enjoy this one. I read this one straight after Melina Marchetta's new one. Makes for a great weekend.

Similar to Spooks
I received this book free to review from Dymocks. It's not the type of book I usually buy but sounded interesting, I did find it a bit boring at times and was disappointed as it's likened to the TV show Spooks which I do enjoy. The book jumps from scene to scene which annoyed me as I was waiting to see desperate to see what happened to the guy. However I did enjoy the ending and how the author reached the conclusion. I will read another of his books as it may just have been slow in this one. It was titled Slow Horses!

first in a great series
Slow Horses is Herron’s first book in the Slough House series, recently re-released in conjunction with the release of book 4, Spook Street. After a mission gone terribly wrong River Cartwright is sent to Slough House, a place where tasks that didn’t matter were preformed by people that didn’t care. Where alongside a pre-digital overflow of paperwork, a post-useful crew of misfits can be stored and left to gather dust. The story is told with a wry wit, in metaphors, retrospect and hypotheticals with plenty of laugh out loud moments and dark humour. Slow Horses is an introduction to the main characters, the cast outs, at Slough House and their boss Jackson Lamb. The characterization is brilliant as Herron brings together a mismatched bunch of has-beens, loners that haven’t quite given up on the hope of one day returning to Regents Park. Under all the character development is a great plot with backstabbing, twists, conspiracy theories, double crossing and buck passing. It’s compelling and edgy and pulls the story along with a rush of adrenaline as the pace quickens and events spiral out of control. With my thanks to Dymocks and Hachette for my copy to read and review

Totally gripping
From the first pages I felt that I knew the characters as the words painted such a real picture. Even the description of the dreary Slough House made it sound familiar . A story with many twists and turns to keep my interest as always wondering what will happen next.

Fast-paced thriller
Slow Horses is a fast-paced British spy thriller with three dimensional characters I couldn't stop thinking about days afterwards. There are plenty of plot twists and as each character's back story is revealed the pieces slowly slot into pace. There were times when I found myself racing through the pages as if reading faster would give the characters more time to deal with the challenges they were facing. A very enjoyable read, so much so that I went out and bought the next book in the series (Dead Lions) soon after. A great gift for anyone who enjoys Spooks or Stella Rimington's novels.

English spy thriller
Thank you for the opportunity to read this book. Loved the heroes - not glamorous or fast living - people viewed as 'losers' by their peers but able to stand up and be counted when it mattered. Black humour and twists and turns in the story to keep you interested. I enjoyed it very much and will certainly be reading more of this author.

Slow Horses = slow reading
I won this book through a Dymocks competition, after reading it, thank goodness I didn't spend money buying it. If you don't mind ridiculously long chapters then you won't mind this book. It's very slow pacing of the plot it honestly was a struggle to finish this book. 12 different characters to try remember as you're reading and some of the sentences were gibberish to me. I like a book that's a page turner and you're keen to find out what happens - except for the first and last two chapters this certainly wasn't the case. It's very slow going and this isn't a fast paced book. So unfortunately I was disappointed with this book and I won't be reading any of this authors other books in future.

Crime, Spy, Thriller
Bluff, and double bluff, with a triple somersault (or two) along the way, intricately plotted and tautly written with a large cast that manages not to become unwieldy. A spy novel set very much in the modern age but with a cast of characters and a sensibility that owes as much to classic comedy as it does to thrillers. I can definitely see myself revisiting Slough House in Mick Heron's next instalments in this series. Thanks to Dymocks Booklovers and Hachette for the opportunity to read this first book in the series.

Enjoyable read
This is the first book in the Slough House series and serves as a good introduction to the main characters - misfits of the intelligence service, not entirely cast out, but working on the fringes. The pace may have felt a tad slow at the start, but there's more than ample action later with interesting plot twists and plenty of espionage interspersed with dark, wry humour. Won this book through a Dymocks competition (thank you Dymocks) and enjoyed reading it.

English spook thriller
When the stars of the show are a group of "misfits and losers", throw in spooks, murder, mystery and chaos, only a group of MI5 experts can create, you have a great story. I will look forward to catching up with this caste in the following Jackson Lamb thrillers. It has humour, interesting characters, twisting plot lines......a great read!
