Old Tucker Man gives an insight into the struggles and efforts of a once proud hunter and the troubles he faced in providing for his family. It is a story of how an Indigenous family coped in Australian contemporary society, which looked upon Aboriginal people as far less important than the money earned from farming livestock. Unc and his family had all their spirit land forcibly taken from them, and the natural food source was replaced by European farming animals. The author derives this story from the once powerful and fearless tribes of the rich western districts of Victoriathe Kirrae Whurrung and Chaparung Nations.
