Force of Nature

Dymocks Book of the Month - October 2017

What happened to Alice Russell? Five women go into the bush... but only four come out. The second, hotly anticipated novel by the author of the bestselling The Dry.

Five women reluctantly pick up their backpacks and start walking along the muddy track. Only four come out the other side.

The hike through the rugged Giralang Ranges is meant to take the office colleagues out of their air-conditioned comfort zone and teach resilience and team building. At least that is what the corporate retreat website advertises.

Federal Police Agent Aaron Falk has a particularly keen interest in the whereabouts of the missing bushwalker. Alice Russell is the whistleblower in his latest case - and Alice knew secrets. About the company she worked for and the people she worked with. Far from the hike encouraging teamwork, the women tell Falk a tale of suspicion, violence and disintegrating trust. And as he delves into the disappearance, it seems some dangers may run far deeper than anyone knew.

RATINGS & REVIEW

great thriller read
i'm not usually a reader of thriller/mysteries but having been given the opportunity to read this, i was pleasantly surprised. i thoroughly enjoyed Force of Nature. The placement in the aussie setting made it so much more relatable too. Thank you so much, Jane Harper

Jane Harper does not disappoint
I reluctantly bought The Dry a few months ago but was surprisingly enthralled and absorbed from the very first page. I was delighted to win from Dymocks a proof copy of Jane Harper’s second novel Force of Nature and can happily say that I was in no way disappointed. I was pleased to see that Aaron Falk was back as the main character. As I got more into the story I empathised with all the characters and was riveted until the very end with all the twists and angles and appreciated the unsuspected end. I look forward to more from Jane, she has become my new favourite author.

Suspenseful second novel
Thankyou to dymocks who provided me with a proof copy of this novel Jane Harper's second novel is even better then her first. She artfully uses misdirection, weaves a delicate web of lies and complications that'll leave you guessing to the last moments. Was a an easy book to read, and I finished it within two sittings. Definitely recommend this book

Fantastic follow-up
I loved The Dry and was very pleased to receive a proof copy of Jane Harper's new book. As with its predecessor, the author makes excellent use of the Australian landscape and its dangers. This gives the already compelling story a pervasive sense of tension. This book is a worthy follow-up.

Jane Harper sure doesn’t run...dry
Great pacing, well written twists and turns, and a local thriller to boot! Jane Harper is surely an author I’ll keep my eyes on. I won an ARC copy with Dymocks as a Gold Booklover member.

Jane Harper is one to watch
Jane Harper has, within the space of just over a year, very quickly established herself as one of my favourite writers. Her ability to capture Australian scenes (something that has been lacking on the crime fiction landscape for a long time) is second to none and each character is fully fleshed-out and realised. Although I don't think Force of Nature had the same impact on me as The Dry, I loved the twists it took and the way it had me guessing until the very end. I also especially enjoyed the references to The Dry that also didn't give anything of its ending away. Aaron Falk (and his colleagues) are characters I hope to see more of.

Great weekend read
I enjoyed reading Force of Nature just as much as The Dry. I read it over a weekend and loved all of the plot twists and red herrings - is it a missing person? Is it a murder mystery?

Now wary of my next bushwalk
A great follow up book that has made me wary of my next bushwalk. :) I enjoyed the first book and the second did not disappoint. I have already recommended it to friends and colleagues as a great weekend or holiday read. I have really enjoyed Jane's books and am looking forward to the next one. Crime/thriller books without excessive blood and gore.

excellent
I was sent a proof copy of Jane Harper’s Force of Nature as part of a Dymocks competition. I loved it from the start. The chapters are small enough that you can read ‘just one more’. The story is about a group of colleagues who go on a corporate retreat organised by their work, and a woman goes missing. This woman has also been assisting police with an investigation into the company she works for. So why has she gone missing? The area they are in is also infamous for an Ivan Milat type killer, from a couple of decades ago. The story alternates chapters from telling the story from the police who want the woman found so that their investigation can continue, to the group of women on the retreat. It also introduces some other people who could possibly be involved in the mystery disappearance. I thought it was well written and kept my attention from start to finish. Now I’m going to have to go and buy her first novel!

Liked it - Didn't love it
I wish I could say I loved this book as much as The Dry, but it fell a little short, for me. Clear indication of my engagement (or lack of) is how long it took me to finish it. I'm trying to work out why, since other reviewers clearly loved it. One reason may be that the detective character, Aaron Falk, was strangely missing (for me), almost as much so as Alice Russell, the woman who never returned from the bush walk retreat. Sure he was there on the case but he was somehow less involved. More seemed at stake last time, in The Dry, when he was in his childhood home town. The author had him as part of an investigation in which Alice Russell was involved, prior to her disappearance, but for me it wasn't enough. I do have to say that although it was a slow start, the second half of the novel flew. Once the subplot of children, specifically the daughter of Alice Russell and the daughter of another of the women on the retreat came to the fore, more was on the line. This tied in nicely with Aaron Falk's relationship with his own father. I enjoyed it, I read to the end, and I liked it - I just didn't love it. Thank you to Dymocks for a review copy!

A bit overstated
This was an intresting book right until the end with all the different characters and little internal stories, however I hoped the ending would be more complicated and that I would be shocked by the culprit and their motive as well as their connection to the victim. Another thing I was a bit concerned about was the characters' physical descriptions as unlike many other book I couldn't really picture the characters in my head. On the better side I loved the characters of the investigators and the realistic approaches to the job. I also loved the diction of this book and found it very effective as it keeeped me hooked. All in all I loved this book except for the ending but that is my opinion. I would recommend this book for people who love 'lost in the bush' books as well as those who would like to read something different
