Eggshell Skull

'Brutal, brave and utterly compelling, Bri Lee's extraordinary memoir shines a light on the humanity and complexity of our justice system and the limitless courage victims of crime must summon in a legal process stacked against them at every turn. In the age of #MeToo, Eggshell Skull is a prescient personal account of a young woman's fierce and unflinching battle against her abuser. I can't remember a book I devoured with such intensity, nor one that moved me so profoundly.' Rebecca Starford, author of Bad Behaviour and co-founder of Kill Your Darlings

'An illuminating meditation on society's complicity in sexual assault, told through one woman's pursuit of justice in a system that has failed women and survivors for too long. Powerful as it is timely, Eggshell Skull is a courageous, heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful memoir from one of Australia's sharpest young writers.' Liam Pieper, author of The Toymaker

Eggshell Skull: A well-established legal doctrine that a defendant must accept 'take their victim as they come': If a thin skull caused the death of someone after a punch, that victim's weakness cannot mitigate the seriousness of the crime, nor the punishment.

But what if it also works the other way? What if a defendant on trial for sexual crimes has to accept his 'victim' as she comes: a strong, determined accuser who knows the legal system, who will not back down until justice is done?

Bri Lee began her first day of work at the Brisbane Magistrates Court as a bright-eyed judge's associate. Eighteen months later she was back as the complainant in her own case.

This is the story of Bri's journey through the Australian legal system; first as the daughter of a policeman, then as a law student, and finally as a judge's associate in both metropolitan and regional Queensland--where justice can look very different, especially for women. Confronted by horrific criminal behaviour every day in court, Bri's eyes were opened to the inequity of the legal system and how complainants in sex crime investigations and trials struggle to receive justice, are re-victimised, and let down by the system with heartbreaking frequency.

The injustice Bri witnessed, mourned and raged over every day finally forced her to confront her own personal history, one she'd vowed never to tell. And this is how, after years of struggle, she found herself on the other side of the courtroom, telling her story.

Bri Lee has written a fierce and eloquent memoir that addresses both her own reckoning with the past to speak the truth, as well as the stories around her, with wit, empathy and unflinching courage. Eggshell Skull is a haunting appraisal of modern Australia from a new and essential voice.

'Eggshell Skull is as finely wrought as its name suggests - a sensitive and clear-eyed account of childhood sexual abuse that ripples out to encompass both its psychic aftershocks and the gruelling work of seeking legal redress. Lee doesn't flinch from the ugliness of the crime, but her eye for detail is always compassionate, never gratuitous. This is a book that honours its survivors, and one that should establish Lee as a serious name in Australian non-fiction.' Jessica Friedmann, author of Things That Helped.

RATINGS & REVIEW

Very personal
Eggshell Skull takes you inside the long and tortuous legal system involved when trying to make a complaint about being sexually assaulted as a child. Bri gives a warts and all commentary which can at times be very harrowing. One feels her pain and distress about the slowness of the legal processes and the frustration that she experiences. Very enlightening but rather scary. I can't help but feel that this book could be too personal for anyone who had been assaulted as a child and was thinking about laying an official complaint.

Wow what a writer
I couldn’t put this book down! Boring it is not. While the subject is heavy, Bri Lee has made the narrative flow such that it’s sometimes hard to remember this is a memoir of a time with dark and terrible secrets. Congratulations to Bri Lee on writing such an accessible memoir that tells so courageously of such a difficult time. Triumphant.

Chrishingly Brilliant
This book is remarkable. Reading it I felt so naive in regards to our legal system (specifically focused on QLD in this memoir.) - you assume that your rights are at the forefront of the system and automatically upheld. Unfortunately this highlighted the out-of-date structure of the system (especially in regards to women's rights) and the all too present negative attitude of society toward women and specifically their right to defend themselves without negative connotations regarding their demeanor, personality or looks. I wouldn't think that the system could or would fail me (if I were to need it) and reading this highlighted that unfortunately this isn't the case for many, many women. There were certain excepts of the book that made my confront and understand my white privilege. Many books have attempted this, so few do it with such aplomb as Lee has within these pages. Lee has given so much of herself to this book; that is more than evident within these pages. She has opened herself up to the Australian public (specifically the women of Australia) to give the voiceless a voice and to empower those who have felt powerless. She is articulate, defiant and strong. With this book she has gifted the world something extremely relevant and extremely powerful. I hope this memoir gives people (specifically women) the power to fight and believe.

Courageous and compelling
Bri Lee shows great courage with this beautifully written memoir. Gave me such an eye opening experience regarding the australian judicial system and the complexities involved for victims of sexual abuse. This memoir carries with it an unforgetable message of strength and determination that is inspirational and worth reading

Eye-opening and compelling
The insights into the daily horrors so many Australian children are facing both from sexual abuse and then the courts process in trying to bring perpetrators to justice, make this a must-read. Gut-wrenching in parts, a story of fighting against the odds to gain some sort of justice in a system which is often stacked against victims.

Informative
This is a confronting insight into the problems with the justice system. A frightening tale of truly evil acts and the impact on all involved. Such a bravely told story.

Heartbreaking but inspirational
THIS book is powerful and raw. However, it's important to mention right at the start that this book is not suitable for all readers. It is the story of a woman's journey first as an associate (sitting in on many trials that feature crimes against women and children) and then as a complainant in her own child sexual assault trial. There's some harrowing descriptions (including some of self harm) and it can feel a little overwhelming at times so be warned going into it. A lot can be said for the writing though. There were so many moments where I felt her pain and anxiety, I cried over the cruelty of the legal system and felt physical revulsion during so many of the stories she recounted (both hers and others). It's hard to read but I'm glad I read it. It's the journey of a strong woman working her way through the kind of painful journey I can't even imagine. Definitely recommend.
