WHAT A CHAMPION!!!
This story of apparently blissful Australian domesticity peppered with small doses of bullying, marital bliss and kindergarten politics at first appears to be one of the nost innocuous books you will ever happen to read. But keep reading, find yourself in love with the characters and by book’s end your life may well be changed, and at the very least you will sit motionless in shock for what seems like hours as you struggle to get your heart rate back to normal and your mind back on to what passes for normality.
This book is divine. The first half is relatively slow, but the characters are such a "lovely" bunch; well drawn, with perfect dialogue, and excellent growth that you wont mind the awkward opening chapters in the slightest. Especially as you continue to make progress through the book’s quest. Of course the back of the book will tell you there was a murder. So you know right from the start that someone dies (!). But the question is "who?" The alert reader may very well predict it all with one hindered percent accuracy well before everything is revealed (I didn't, but a work colleague did!!!) but this makes the ending all the more entertaining for those that prefer to live the book instead of out smarting it.
There are plots, plot twists, and sub plots aplenty in the book’s second half, and those that the reader loves to begin with will end up covered in mountains of hatred, and of course those bad eggs that we all loved to hate turn out to be perfectly normal and respectful, thank you very much. There are hints of happy endings for everyone concerned, but nothing is confirmed in that regard, but this book isn’t just about the story, and it certainly isn’t just about the characters. Spoilers prevent me from saying what its really about, so all i can do is give this book absolute full marks, and rejoice once again in what it means to be Australian. And that Liane Moriarty is one, too, and that she continues to write world class fiction with incredibly powerful messages.
What a champion!
