Bergerac - The Complete Fourth Series

Handsome, blue-eyed and brooding, maverick cop Detective Sergeant Jim Bergerac of Jersey’s Bureau des Étrangers is one of television’s most popular detectives. Moving with the power of Bergerac’s vintage red Triumph Roadster sports car, each episode guarantees full-throttle excitement, ingenious plots and colourful characters as Bergerac patrols the harbour cafes, cliff-top mansions and secluded coves on the trail of the villains, murderers, spies and smugglers of the holiday island and tax haven. Series 4 finds Bergerac in possibly his most serious relationship since the break-up of his marriage - of beautiful estate agent Susan Young can endure the detective's unyielding dedication to his job. Meanwhile, the captivating, but as yet uncaptured, jewel thief Philippa Vale returns to the island - does her unfinished business include Jersey's maverick cop? Combining action with atmosphere, and spectacle with suspense, BERGERAC launched John Nettles to international stardom for 9 series, leading him to another long-running role as D.C.I. Barnaby in Midsomer Murders. For the first time, all 9 uncut episodes from the fourth series arrive on DVD plus the 1986 feature-length Christmas Special. EPISODES 1. THE LAST INTERVIEW A mafia informer, now in hiding and dying of cancer, wants to make one last death-bed confession. Howard Bailey, a famous television journalist now retired and living as a recluse in Jersey, Bailey, is the only man he feels he can trust. When Bailey refuses to do the interview, Arlene Roskin, an attractive and extremely determined New Yorker, comes to Jersey to try to persuade him to change his mind. Bergerac’s job is to protect Bailey – without really knowing why or from whom. Guest stars Barry Foster, Kate Harper, Dennis Creaghan and Stephen McGann. 2. OFFSHORE TRADES Bergerac is investigating the mysterious death of a scuba diver and the disappearance of French film star François Montauban’s English wife. As he examines the evidence, he finds that a bizarre and deadly coincidence links the two cases. Guest stars Ian McCulloch, Bernard Archard and Stephen Riddle. 3. WHAT DREAMS MAY COME? An anonymous telephone call prompts Bergerac to re-examine a road accident that had been dismissed as routine. A mystery surrounds the victim, Jerry Bruce, if that is his real name. Nothing on him or in his flat gives any indication of his true identity or where he originally came from. Further investigation reveals that, whoever the man was, he had literally been frightened to death, and the occult was in some way to blame. Though Bergerac is extremely sceptical about the Black Arts, he discovers others are not so blasé.Writer Bart Bellow has made a great deal of money out of the supernatural. Guest stars Charles Gray, Jill Meager, Hubert Rees and Malcolm Tierney. 4. LOW PROFILE The hunt for the Isobelle, a sunken treasure ship, has brought renowned underwater archaeologist Dr Ferns to Jersey. He and his team of divers are offering shares in the project, which is code-named Deep Gold. Though Bergerac suspects fraud, there is nothing obviously illegal about their activities. So why is BJ Farrell, a notorious London property tycoon and gangster, on Jersey? And what is the link between the Isobelle and an eccentric old lady? Guest stars Beryl Reid and Benjamin Whitrow. 5. RETURN OF THE ICE MAIDEN Mary Lou Costain has been a thorn in the Bureau’s flesh for some time, but a tip-off from Sam Leech that she is about to take delivery of some extremely valuable Dutch treasury plates looks like finally nailing her.A trap is set, but sprung too early; Leech is murdered and Costain is still free. Enter Philippa Vale, in Jersey to recover the stolen diamonds she was forced to abandon in a previous encounter with Bergerac. But is Jim wise to set this particularly captivating thief to catch another thief? Guest stars Liza Goddard and Elizabeth Spriggs. 6. CHRISSIE Jersey-based fashion designers Paul and Simone Demoins are busy preparing for their first Paris show and have hired trainee nanny Chrissie Barker to look after their young daughter, Michelle. Panic ensues when the designs are snatched from Simone’s car, the latest robbery in a crime spree by a teenage gang. Then Chrissie and Michelle disappear… Guest stars Sheila Ruskin, Veronica Smart, Michelle Collins and Duncan Preston. 7. THE TENNIS RACKET Rory O’Brien, a young British John McEnroe, is not Bergerac’s favourite tennis star. Unfortunately, he’s been assigned to protect him after a series of minor accidents and death threats. His dislike of O’Brien’s manager and mentor, John McKennan, leads Jim to suspect him, until reason asserts itself after O’Brien has a narrow escape from serious injury. Surely McKennan wouldn’t want to harm his investment? Someone else must be behind the campaign of intimidation. But who and why? Guest stars Reece Dinsdale and Jonathan Moore. 8. THE SINS OF THE FATHERS A movie about the wartime German Occupation is being shot on Jersey. The subject is not popular with local people, so when the star receives threatening letters, Bergerac is not surprised. When he meets Henry Hoffman, Hollywood’s favourite German, he is even less surprised. Everyone loathes Hoffman, except Joan Grant, his adoring secretary – and he treats her worse than anyone else. Hoffman also has a family connection with the Occupation and some rather unsavoury business connections. So when the threats turn to action, the list of suspects is huge. Guest stars Warren Clarke, Lynn Farleigh and Ursula Howells. 9. AVENGE, O LORD Assigned to guard Sir Geoffrey Newton, a prominent mainland politician ostensibly in Jersey to study the island's police force, Bergerac learns that he is to co-ordinate maximum security for the signing of a sensitive and secret government trade agreement at a secure location on the island. Bergerac is to be responsible for co-ordinating the operation. The job would be simple enough were it not for the fact that Intelligence sources suggest that Mick Davies, ex SAS, has been hired to assassinate the representative of the foreign government. Guest stars Bernard Hepton, Ian Redford, Terrence Hardiman and Ian McNeice. CHRISTMAS SPECIAL - FIRES IN THE FALL When a woman's family ghosts, and their dreadful secrets, are disturbed by a psychic medium, Jim laughs at the suggestion that the supernatural is to blame. But as his investigation uncovers murder, madness and corruption, he is brought face to face with a terrifying adversary. Guest Stars Amanda Redman, Barrie Ingham, Margaret Scott and Donald Churchill.
