Assassin's Apprentice

‘Fantasy as it ought to be written' George R.R. Martin

The kingdom of the Six Duchies is on the brink of civil war when news breaks that the crown prince has fathered a bastard son and is shamed into abdication. The child's name is Fitz, and his is despised.

Raised in the castle stables, only the company of the king's fool, the ragged children of the lower city and his unusual affinity with animals provide Fitz with any comfort.

To be useful to the crown, Fitz is trained as an assassin; and to use the traditional magic of the Farseer family. But his tutor, allied to another political faction, is determined to discredit, even kill him. Fitz must survive: for he may be destined to save the kingdom.

RATINGS & REVIEW

12/09/2017 10:40:34 PM - Greg
IN A WORD, ITS AMAZING!!!!!
This by now classic release from the fantastical literary wonder that is Robin Hobb is simply gorgeous on as many levels you care to think about. Intrinsically, it is the life story (told in first person) of Royal Bastard (I *hate* that word) Fitz. This particular young man is brought up by the King's Stable master, Burrich, and is surrounded by people who love him (not many of those), people that hate him (slightly more of those) and a smattering of people who are completely indifferent to his existence (the majority of people in the book’s early universe). The book will steal your heart in a matter of minutes. If you are a fantasy lover, you are hooked. If you are an animal lover, you are also hooked. Basic mathematics and logic tell me that this book will appeal to both groups, but if you happen to be both then this book will remain in your heart, your mind and your soul forever. Fitz has many talents, the least of which is ’the wit’ - the talent to communicate psychically with animals of various species. Now, we might think this is a rare, and beautiful thing, but most people who live in Buckkeep think it is a repulsion, and a perversion of everything that the town’s good people hold dear. Sound familiar? You bet it does! Characterisation in this book is first class. Characters of royal blood are given names that shape their nature, for example the reigning Monarch is King Shrewd, and not for no reason. He is one conniving devil (begging your pardon, there, your Highness!). Other characters you will meet and grow to love include the already-mentioned Burrich, Chade Fallstar (an assassin who trains Fitz), the Royal scribe, sons of the King, royal servants, and of course, The Fool. The Fool is one of the most endearing, brilliant, and yet totally confusing characters you can ever hope to meet. Doubts are brought to the reader’s mind about his ancestry on many occasion by Ms Hobb, and yet, despite the fact that we have no idea of where he comes from, and even, what he is, he just about steals the whole show. The bad guys are hideous. ’Red Ship Raiders’ are their somewhat obvious titles, since they raid village after village virtually at will after arriving on (*ahem*) red ships. And yet the story’s bad guys come in other forms, too, much closer to home, as both Fitz, and the reader discovers as they progress through is amazing tome. The writing is sublime. Each chapter is given its own prologue, which not only whets the reader’s appetite for what is about to come, but it puts everything which follows into its own particular context. And the trick is to realise who the book’s narrator is before too long, before you realise that you have just wasted another chapter of excellent writing that would have been even better if you had realised who was doing all of the talking. The first time I read this book many, many, many moons ago it kept me completely enthralled right to the very last page. And it kept me so enthralled that I read the entire trilogy, and then the subsequent trilogy without a break. Robin Hobb is *that* good. Her books are so deep, and so enveloping that describing them as simply ’fantasy’ fails to do them justice. I must admit to referring to her as the ’New Age Tolkien’ - a name which i thought was appropriate the first time around. Now that I am so many years older, and so many books wiser, I feel that even describing her in the same breadth as the genius that created the modern day phenomenon of epic fantasy, actually fails to do her justice. Read the book and see for yourself. In a word, its amazing.
