Born in 1920 in Germany, Eddie Jaku was interned at Auschwitz and survived brutal conditions and the darkest of circumstances. In 1950, he moved to Australia, and spent a number of years sharing his story at the Sydney Jewish Museum. On 12 October 2021, the ‘happiest man of earth’ died, having lived to the age of 101, and seeing himself become a great-grandfather.
Last year, his memoir, The Happiest Man on Earth, brought his story further into the public eye, and won the ABIA Biography of the Year award for 2021 and made our own Book of the Year shortlist. This incredible, heartbreaking and hopeful memoir moved the hearts of many, and his legacy will continue to do so for years to come with a special illustrated gift edition set to be released in November.
“We’re sad to hear of the passing of national treasure Eddie Jaku. The Happiest Man on Earth was undeniably an in-house favourite that has inspired so many of our Booklovers and will be doing so for generations to come.”
