R. A. Spratt returns with book number nine in her popular girl detective series with No Escape. Friday Barnes has a new mystery to solve to save Italy's finest artworks! We wanted to dig a little deeper by asking R. A. Spratt some questions about the book.

In No Escape, Friday Barnes swears she is never solving another mystery. How does that go for her?
RAS: About 21 pages. Friday tries really hard, but she's not very good at suppressing her innate curiosity and powers of observation.

Friday heads to Italy for this next adventure. What draws her there?
RAS: In terms of the story, it's Uncle Bernie. He rings her up and begs her to come and help him look after the collection at the Uffizi Galleries. But we all know that she's really drawn to Italy by the forces of destiny, because that's where Ian is and they have unfinished business.

For those new to the series, what is the significance of her brown cardigan?
RAS: Friday's brown cardigan is a security blanket. It's comforting to wear. But it's also camouflage. It allows Friday to go unnoticed or at least underestimated.

Can you tell us a bit about Ian?
RAS: Ian is really good looking.  You know when someone is so good looking that it's the single most distinctive thing about them? And then that shapes their character. They can get away with anything because people are mesmerized by their beauty. That's Ian, if you add a huge chip on his shoulder because both his parents are totally self absorbed but in polar opposite ways.

What do you enjoy the most about writing this series?
RAS: The dialogue with Friday and Melanie. They say the best things to each other. The fans love the Friday/Ian relationship but really the Friday/Melanie relationship is the heart of the series.

Friday Barnes: No Escape is available in store and online from 2 February 2021.
