With other great series under your belt now, how did it feel to return to the world of the Court of Thorns and Roses?
SJM: Like returning to old friends. These characters are really close to my heart, and it was a joy to spend time with them again. Even if I spent some of that time putting them in terrible situations.
How did you decide to shift from Feyre’s perspective to Nesta’s? What made you want to center the story around the character of Nesta?
SJM: I adore Feyre, but I’ve always been interested in Nesta. She’s a complicated person, and she’s been through so much. Working on A Court of Silver Flames gave me a chance to get in her head and really explore who she is, prickly parts and all. Nesta really grows into herself in this book, and gets her own chance at love.

A Court of Silver Flames is even sexier than your other books. Was it enjoyable to write the tension between Nesta and the ‘Winged Warrior’ Cassian? What inspires you to write such steamy romance, and what were some challenges to capturing that dynamic?
SJM: Nesta and Cassian are really fun to write together—they clash and mesh with each other in interesting ways. They challenge each other, and sometimes that challenges me as a writer, but overall it’s very enjoyable to play out that tension between them. I’m a romance reader, so writing these scenes feels natural to me. In some ways the steamy scenes are a way for them to ease some of that tension—to really let go and show how they feel for each other, even when they can’t say it.
Can you tell us about the kinds of monsters or evil figures we can expect in the story?
I don’t want to give too much away, but I had fun creating some new menaces in this book! And, of course, there are some human monsters, too.
What have you been focusing on next? Can you tease anything from the next novel?
SJM: I’m working on the second book in the Crescent City series, the sequel to House of Earth and Blood. A lot of the secondary characters from the first book get more time on the page in this sequel, and it’s been so fun revisiting that world and getting to know them better.
