Upcoming YA book to film adaptations in 2016

There are some fantastic movies coming out in 2016, particulary ones based on teen fiction.

We’re super excited about all of these and we hope they actually happen (though, you never know with the film industry...).

We've included trailers where possible (you're welcome!) and release dates, though all of these dates are of course subject to change.

The 5th Wave
Aus Release date: 14 January 2016
Starring: Chloë Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass, If I Stay)
Why we’re excited: Chloë Grace Moretz was one of the best things about If I Stay and we’re thrilled to see her in another YA book adaptation.

Allegiant
Aus Release Date: 18 March 2016
Starring: Shailene Woodley, Theo James
Why we’re excited: There were a lot of changes made with Insurgent last year and we’ll be interested to see what they do with this third instalment. Also, Four. Enough said.

The BFG
Aus Release date: Probably July 2016
Directed by Stephen Spielberg
Starring: Rebecca Hall, Bill Hayder, Mark Ryland
Why we’re excited: We know both Disney and Spielberg can nail book-to-film adaptations, so we’re not at all worried about what they’ll do to this favourite novel. We’re excited about the supporting cast of (mostly) giants, including Jemaine Clement!

Alice Through the Looking Glass
Aus Release Date: July 2016 (about 60% set in stone we think)
Produced by Tim Burton
Starring: Basically everyone from the previous movie, plus Sacha Baron Cohen.
Why we’re excited: This follow up looks like it will deliver everything the first movie did, and Sacha Baron Cohen is the perfect addition to this kooky cast.

A Monster Calls
Aus Release Date: Hopefully October 2016
Starring: Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones, Sigourney Weaver
Why we’re excited: Patrick Ness is one of our favourite authors and the teaser trailer released last November looks stunning!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Aus Release Date: Probably November 2016
Written by J. K. Rowling (!!!)
Starring: Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Collin Farrell
Why we’re excited: We’re so excited about so many things about this movie, but the thing we’re most excited about (today at least) is the casting of Ezra Miller. He’s got huge book-to-film pedigree from We Need to Talk About Kevin and Perks of Being a Wallflower. He’s going to absolutely sizzle as The Flash in the up-coming Batman vs Superman, but starring in a J.K. Rowling movie will really throw his star into the limelight where it 100% deserves to be.

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Aus Release Date: December 2016 hopefully
Directed by Tim Burton
Starring: Eva Green, Allison Janney, Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, and Chris O’Dowd, just to name a few.
Why we’re excited: Tim Burton always seems to draw an amazing cast for his movies and he’s really out done himself this time. He’s the perfect person to adapt this weird and beloved story into a stunning film.

Before I Fall
Release Date: Likely to be late 2016 but we make no promises
Starring: Halston Sage (Paper Towns), Zoey Deutch (Vampire Academy)
Why we’re excited: We love the book and we know it will make a great movie! We didn’t think this was going ahead until it was announced in September 2015 that Zoey Deutch had joined the cast. Now we’re (slightly) more hopeful.

The Forest of Hands and Teeth
Release Date: Who knows? If you do, please tell us.
Starring: Maisie Williams (Arya from Game of Thrones)
Why we’re excited: This movie has been going around the rumour mill forever and making us all scream with frustration. Finally a rumour came out in September 2015 that Maisie Williams was in talks to play the lead. Honestly this probably shouldn’t be on the list as it’s unlikely to happen in 2016 but we’re that excited that we thought we’d include it anyway.

This list isn’t complete as there are sure to be some rumoured movies that will actually happen and some of the above are bound to slip to 2017. Rumoured movies are incredibly frustrating – every year we get super excited about adaptations that never happen.

Here are our top ten rumoured teen movie adaptations that are yet to be given a release date:
1.       Looking for Alaska by John Green
2.       Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor
3.       Red Rising by Pierce Brown
4.       Fallen by Lauren Kate
5.       The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken
6.       Angelfall by Susan Ee
7.       Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
8.       Graceling by Kristin Cashore
9.       The Iron Trial by Cassandra Clare and Holly Black
10.     Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

Leave us a comment and let us know which films you're most excited about!
